Diane Michaels: PRODUCTS
SIDE BY SIDE - CD
This is an eclectic recording of vocal and acoustic music for family audiences that includes; traditional folk and Irish songs, standards, children's songs, Calypso, classic country, jazz, Broadway, and an African song of farewell.
My daughter, Carmen and I began working together as a mother/daughter duo when she was about three years old. She had just started taking violin lessons at that time, and it was always a hit when we played together. Even though her first ventures on the stage were brief, over time, she became a full time performing partner in some of my shows. We toured together for many years as the duo, SIDE BY SIDE. Carmen and I began working on this CD project when she was still in high school, so it includes some of her earlier violin work. Between the two of us, we recorded every instrument and every vocal track on the CD, some arrangements taking weeks to complete.
The whole project was really a family affair. My dad has a small recording studio in his basement, and we spent many, many hours over a three year period putting this project together. My mom kept the stove hot, supper cooking, and tiptoed around upstairs so the ceiling wouldn't creak down in the studio.
After Carmen left to go to college in 2002, she would come home on the weekends to finish up her tracks. The CD was released early in 2004.
A lot of water has gone under the bridge since then. We don't get to perform together much anymore . . . but every so often our schedules come together at the same time as a performing opportunity. Carmen began her college career studying theater, but eventually changed majors to earn a violin performance degree. She finished her undergraduate work in May of 2008, and will begin her masters degree program in the fall of 2009.
